EPISODE EIGHT: THE IDOL SWIM TEAM
The lads have been having the time of their lives riding and getting inked, but i haven’t been completely without some sight seeing fun. In Athens, me and McGesus went about our usual activities of swimming and in Croatia, biking. A well celebrated man from among our ranks named us ,in jest, the ‘Geriatric Swim Team’ – well now we’ve swum all over Britain, the U.S., Germany, Finland, Montreux, The Czech Republic and of course on this tour, Athens! These pics of me and the newly named McGesus (by Steve V. my minder) are us swimming in a pool in the hotel in Athens but we also swim in the fantastic pools in Germany and all over Europe as they have some of the best indoor and outdoor pools i’ve ever seen.
It really is a summer way of life for a lot of the nations of Europe and we enjoy it too. No one expects me at the local pool so i go quite unmolested usually. In Helsinki ‘Green Day’ had been at the pool the day before so it’s not just Mcgesus and me who are doing this we found out. Will there be a future swim meet between the two bands? Fuck knows, but we are practicing as if their might be one! McGesus is nuts, pushing us on and counts all the metres for me as i’m useless at maths.
On the ’08 tour we were doing 3 miles in two hours but this tour so far i’ve only managed a little over a mile and a quarter but the tour ain’t over yet! On the flipside we biked to some local Croatian spots near Zagreb as testified by these pics of us at the local radio tower and a castle nearby. It was cool, we borrowed some big bikes from a guy called Damir Serara on our day off and were led about by a nice chap who took the pics. I’m careful about putting myself in danger because without me there would be no gig and i’m not letting you down like that but in Russia and Croatia i did ride if only briefly.
I rode all winter in L.A. to get my rocks off before the tour, biking solo or with Steve Jones’s “Jones Gang” which Billy M. is a member of as well, also called the Hell Fire Canyon Club. I got to know the San Padres forest quite well, as well as the Angeles Crest, breaking my foot one Sunday on a shredded piece of truck tire that was in the road which gave me a hairline fracture which just cured itself in time for the tour!
I’m out here having fun, on stage and off, you’re a great audience, see you one of these nights!
Love B.F.I.Xxx.
