WEEK ONE: REHEARSALS
First of all, I’d like to welcome everyone to the new look Official Billy Idol website. And welcome to the first of (hopefully) many tour diaires from me – your host and guide through the rollercoaster world of touring – Billy Morrison. It’s an honor to be playing guitar in this band and sharing the 6 string duties with Steve is just amazing for me. The guy is, quite simply, a world class player and it forces me to try and be the best I can be at every step of the way. Sharing my ‘new guy’ status with me is my friend Jeremy Colson on drums and I have to say that I’m happy not to be the only freshman on the block! Idol veterans, Stephen McGrath on bass guitar and Derek Sherinian on keys have been so supportive and helpful in welcoming Jeremy and I into the fold. And quite honestly, to have Billy fronting this amazing band every day in rehearsals and singing all those killer songs is energizing and exciting. We are all dying to kick this thing off and get to the first show!
I figured I would throw the first entry up during our rehearsals, so that I can say hello and we can begin the process of documenting the tour. Once we are out on the road, I will be updating this diary on a weekly basis, giving you all a blow by blow, day by day peek inside the machine that is Billy Idol on the road. Right now, we are all heavily immersed in flightcases, leads, cords, guitars, amps and various items of equipment as we go through all the songs and get the music (and all that equipment) ready to go. It’s not just running through a song to make sure we can play it. Before a tour like this, there is a ton of ‘behind the scenes’ work that goes down – trying to figure out why something doesn’t work, (that worked just two minutes ago!) or making constantly changing adjustments to a particular sound that we use.
For me, I have been trying to figure out how to get 14 boxes of granola into one drawer in my wardrobe case….. It’s all about priorities!!! In all seriousness, I have been programming my rack and dialing in the sounds for each song. As I am the rhythm guitarist, I am lucky not to have too much ‘space age weirdo sounds’ to get right – how Steve does some of that stuff I shall never know! On my end, it’s more about tone, delay times and a few clean sounds that need to be just right.
I’m going to advise all of you to join Twitter and follow BILLYIDOLONLINE – I can’t give you any details right now, but be assured that from time to time, Twitter will be the primary source of information that you guys may need to know. This website will always be the main source of all things Idol, but we may just throw a surprise or two your way through Twitter BEFORE it appears on the site. So go ahead and get your Twitter on – and maybe you’ll be thanking me for the heads up later. For now, I gotta get moving – there’s a few interesting choices of songs in this 2010 set list and I have some more learning to do. We’ll see you guys very soon.
