On 26th April, Chrysalis will release a Deluxe Edition of Generation X, the self-titled 1978 debut album by one of the great British punk bands of the late 1970s.

Generation X’s story is deeply rooted in the London punk scene. Singer Billy Idol was a member of the hugely influential Bromley Contingent while bassist Tony James had played with both Mick Jones and Brian James who went on to form The Clash and The Damned respectively. Both Idol and Tony James joined punk band Chelsea in early 1976 before leaving to form Generation X.

Taking their name from an influential 1965 book on mod culture, the band’s line up was finalised in early 1977 by guitarist Bob ‘Derwood’ Andrews and 18-year-old drummer, Mark Laff (who had previously drummed with Subway Sect).

Managed by Roxy Club founder Andrew Czezowski, the band signed to Chrysalis in the summer of 1977, releasing their first single, Your Generation, that September. With a sleeve co-designed by Idol and James with legendary in-house Stiff Records designer, Barney Bubbles, Your Generation was a slice of power-pop punk that announced the band’s arrival in style. It was followed in November by Wild Youth, a song inspired by street graffiti which the band had seen on a photo shot.

In February 1978 the band released the single Ready Steady Go. A potent pop song, it boldly celebrated the icons of Sixties pop, going against the orthodoxy of the times. It was followed that March by the release of their self-titled debut album, produced by Martin Rushent (Buzzcocks, The Stranglers). Featuring 11 songs, Generation X stands out as one of the best albums of its time. Alongside established favourites such as Listen, Kleenex and Day By Day, it also featured Kiss Me Deadly, written just two weeks before the band went into the studio. A musical epic that repositioned the mood of Bruce Springsteen’s New York street opera Jungleland in the West End of London, Kiss Me Deadly showed just how much the band were moving away from ram-a-lama, three-chord punk towards a more mature brand of storytelling rock ‘n’ roll with greater depth, feeling and texture.

They could, of course, still rock out, and the album closed with a no-holds-barred rendition of Youth Youth Youth. Recorded in one take in a midnight session, with Derwood having set up a wall of amplifiers behind him in the studio, it features one of the great guitar solos of the punk era.

The album, with a cover shot by Gered Mankowitz, remains Generation X’s defining moment. While all four members went on to further musical projects – and, in the case of Billy Idol, a solo career which would turn him into an international star – the fires that burned when the four of them were in full cry from 1976 to 1979 remain an inspiration: over four decades since its creation, the first Generation X album is a musical landmark that continues to fascinate.

Charting at number 29 on its release, the album has gone on to become one of the classic punk debuts which has been a major influence on successive generations, particularly in the U.S. Rolling Stone magazine placed it at number 7 in their 50 Greatest Pop-Punk Albums, and it’s cited by the likes of Nirvana/Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong as a vital and seminal punk album.

The Generation X expanded deluxe edition CD set has been newly remastered from the original production tapes and includes 11 previously unreleased recordings. CD1 contains the original UK 11 track album with CD2 including all the A and B-sides of their singles from the period, 11 previously unreleased outtakes, a single mix and a number of mixes made by engineer Alan Winstanley (Madness, Elvis Costello, Morrissey).

This 2CD is an 8-Panel Digipak with O-Card and 12-page booklet, with previously unseen photos and newly commissioned sleeve notes by journalist Adrian Thrills.

The expanded deluxe edition vinyl box set has also been newly remastered and cut from the original production tapes. LP1 contains the original UK 11 track album, LP2 includes all the A and B-sides of their singles from the period and LP3 contains 11 previously unreleased outtakes, a single mix and a number of mixes made by engineer Alan Winstanley (Madness, Elvis Costello, Morrissey).

VITAL IDOL: REVITALIZED

More than 30 years after his groundbreaking Vital Idol compilation cemented the vibrancy of the dance-rock remix genre in the second half of the 1980s, Billy Idol’s Vital Idol: Revitalized collection features 11 brand-new remixes of Billy’s most classic and enduring hits. Lending their hands to the Revitalized proceedings are electronic dance luminaries Moby, The Crystal Method and Paul Oakenfold as well as current innovators including RAC, Tropkillaz, Shiba San, Juan Maclean and CRAY.

Vital Idol, initially released in Britain in 1985 and subsequently issued in the United States in 1987, was the first remix record released by a rock superstar. Besides being certified platinum, Vital Idol was accompanied by a version of “Mony Mony” that reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart, as well as hitting the Top 10 on the U.K. Singles chart.

Highlights found within the grooves of Revitalized include The Crystal Method’s percussive, explosive stab at “Rebel Yell,” CRAY’s bass-and-keyboard-blessed “White Wedding,” Tropkillaz’s trop-house framing of “Eyes Without A Face,” St. Francis Hotel’s shimmering stop/start caress of “Flesh For Fantasy,” and RAC’s retro-harmonic, fist-pumping “Dancing With Myself.”

The digital version of Revitalized features four additional exclusive remixes, namely the brand new Billy Idol/Steve Stevens Remix of “Mony Mony,” Paul Oakenfold’s Extended Remix of “One Breath Away,” Moby’s “Half Time Version” of his take on “(Do Not) Stand In The Shadows” and “Save Me Now” (Lost Dog Remix), reworked by Billy Idol’s son, Willem Wolfe Broad and Eddie B.

UPDATE FROM BILLY 03.06.18

What a year last year was!… We completed our 48 date residency in Las Vegas playing a variety of greatest hits and deep cuts throughout the two-year run. This will inform whatever we do next with a lot of vitality and choice in terms of song and set make up so you know the spring U.S. festival dates and summer European and U.K. shows are going to rock!

As ‘the Ace Face’ in the Classic Quadrophrenia production last Summer I played on stages I could never have imagined ever playing on ie. the Metropolitan Opera in N.Y. or Tanglewood CT with classical musicians & choirs… it was an incredible opportunity and I would like to thank Pete Townshend for having me along for what was a magic 3 weeks. The Chicago Classic Quad show was pretty special because Eddie Vedder was playing the part of The Godfather and it was fun for me to see he was having as much difficulty as me in singing along with the Orchestra as for us rock singers, it’s hard to know exactly were the entrance point to sing the songs are even with a conductor showing you… as the ebb and flow and swells of the classical orchestra are very different to sing to than a rock band. I didn’t feel so alone, thanks Eddie… Alfie Boe, as Jimmy, was having the time of his life and crushing it every night! We had a great time supporting eachother’s performance. Alfie’s job was huge but he took it on and dealt with it in such a way that his positive and excited attitude saw him blast through each performance from Tanglewood to the Greek in LA with ease. I was pretty amazed at times at how he uses his incredible talent, Good on ya Alfie…

We remastered and have begun releasing the classic Idol records; Billy Idol, Rebel Yell & Idolize Yourself on vinyl and are planning a Generation X package release for Xmas 2018…

Performing on The Voice with contestant Chloe Kohanski was a fantastic experience as she was fun to work with and really took on White Wedding, so it was magic when I heard she had won the finale and I’m glad I could help a young talented woman go forward with success as she embarks on her career….

We didn’t make it to South America but we will do so in the future… had already made up my mind to do the Classic Quad last summer but the tour we would have been on with Aerosmith was cancelled and that would have nixxed us doing South America anyway so I was glad I made the decision I made but… we will, hook or by crook, find a way to get down there!

We have begun writing some new material and are making our way towards a direction for our next extravaganza… and I’m continuing my SiriusXM show ‘Live Transmission’ radio show on the 1st Wave channel 33…

Rock on!
Your mate,
BFI
